First posting upon graduation from Academy was as operations officer of U.S.S. Voyager under Captain Kathryn Janeway. On Voyager's first mission to the Badlands to pursue a Maquis vessel, Kim and all hands were presumed lost when Starfleet lost contact with ship on stardate 48307.5. Voyager was actually swept to the Delta Quadrant by alien technology; recently, contact was briefly re-established with the ship, providing the following information.
Kim continued duties as operations officer, and assisted in Engineering. Has served on numerous away missions. In 2371, stardate 48623.5, Kim made first contact with the Vhnori civilization, after traveling through a subspace vacuole. The location of the Vhnori world is unknown, possibly in another dimension. Though Kim had to clinically die to be returned through another vacuole, he was successfully resucitated. In 2372, Kim was killed, when part of the Starship Voyager experienced an explosive decompression when the ship encountered a spatial scission. A duplicate of Kim, from a dupicate Voyager created by the scission, returned to the original ship, replacing the deceased Kim.
In 2374, while exploring a destroyed Borg Cube, Kim had the first tangible encounter with a member of Species 8472. Alien cells infected him, consuming his tissue painfully. The cure for his condition, which involved adapting Borg assimilation nanoprobes, was the key to forging the first known humanoid-Borg Collective cooperation that drove Species 8472 back to their home dimension.
Kim has recently assisted the former Borg female called Seven Of Nine in creating the Astrogation Lab.
